Generation One refers to the original My Little Ponies; The first generation. It spanned between 1982 and 1992, although there have been re-releases since. MLP started as "My Pretty Pony" in 1982, but was rebranded in 1983.

Types of G1 Toys

BRUSHABLES
The Brushables are the primary focus of the MLP Toy line. The G1 Brushables are usually around 5 inches tall (babies are around 3 inches tall) and are made of a soft, flexible rubber-like plastic, with nylon plastic brushable hair. They were mostly released in individual packs, containing a pony, a hair brush, and a ribbon to tie around the pony’s tail. The packs were typically released in sets, where all the ponies in the set had a specific theme (such as the Twinkle Eyed ponies, which had faux gemstone eyes, or the So Soft Ponies, which were flocked so it seemed like they had fur).

Nirvana Ponies...
G1 MLPs were mostly made in China and Hong Kong. MLP is owned by Hasbro, which is based in the US, and the toys were primarily sold for a US audience, but made their way across seas as well. Nirvana ponies are ponies that are made outside the US and sold exclusively outside of the US, that have some sort of trait that sets them apart from the US pony equivalent - such as different colors, patterns, or poses. Nirvana ponies are very sought out by collectors, and often go for much more money, because of their uniqueness, and how hard they can be to find. Some countries that Nirvana ponies have come from are Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Macau, India, and Africa. Some ponies were entirely exclusive outside of the US - with no US equivalent - such as Baby Minty, who was only ever sold in Greece.

Mail Order Ponies
Mail Order ponies were not sold in stores - People had to purchase them and have them sent by mail through clubs like the My Little Pony Fan Club. Some Mail Order ponies were prizes for club activities. Because Mail Order ponies were so exclusive, there are less of them out there than ponies sold in stores. This makes Mail Order Ponies rarer and usually more pricey online!

Non Ponies
G1 contained a number of non-pony toys, including human dolls representing the human characters from the TV Specials, as well as dogs, cats, and bunnies with flocked faux fur and brushable tails and sometimes ears. There were also non-brushable, smaller, toys of said animals, sold with the brushable animals or as accessories with the ponies. The non-pony toys got their own sets.

Year 1       Year 2      Year 3      Year 4     Year 5

Year 6       Year 7      Year 8      Year 9     Year 10

My Pretty Pony - 1981 - The inspiration/precursor for My Little Pony

YEAR 1 (1982-1983)
Flat Foot Ponies (Unofficial name) - The first 6 brushables ever released. These ponies were all earth ponies, and had fully flat hooves. Ponies released after these 6 had concave hooves, not flat ones. The original six are in the “Collector’s Pose”, the most common G1 pose, although they are built slightly different from Collectors Pose ponies released after them - With lower down heads and more slanted backs. Their hooves are dated 1982, although they were actually released in 1983. Also sometimes reffered to as the Collector's Ponies, or Classic Earth Ponies.

YEAR 2 (1983-1984)
Second Wave Earth Ponies (Unofficial name) -  In late 1983 and early 1984, six more earth ponies were released. These ponies were Applejack, Bow Tie, Blossom, Cotton Candy, Bubbles, and Seashell. Blossom and Cotton Candy were re-releases from the original 6, while the others were all new. This second wave of ponies introduced two new poses, the Sitting Down or “Bubbles” pose, and the Shy Pony or “Bow Tie” pose. The sitting down pose was not used in the US again after these two releases.

Unicorn Series -  Unicorns were introduced in Year 2, with a set of 4 ponies each sold individually in packs that said “Unicorn” at the top. These first unicorns were Twilight, Moondancer, Sunbeam, and Glory. The unicorns had new molds not used for the earth ponies. Twilight and Glory used the same mold, and Moondancer had her own.

Pegasus Series -  Similar to unicorns, pegasi were introduced at the same time in a set of 2, sold in packs that said “Pegasus”. The first pegasi were Firefly and Medley, who both used the same pose/mold, a newly introduced one. In total, between the Pegasi and Unicorn series, there were 6 ponies, the usual amount for a set, so often they are grouped together as one set - They were advertised as a full set by Hasbro at points too. But the boxes just say “Unicorn” or “Pegasus” not “Unicorn & Pegasus”.

Sea Ponies -  Sea ponies were introduced as toys in a set of 3. In the US these 3 ponies were Sealight, Seawinkle, and Wavedancer. In the UK they were Sea Spray, Surf Dancer, and Wavebreaker.

Rainbow Ponies - These ponies all had rainbow colored hair and glittery cutie marks instead of matte ones. There were six of them, with two being earth ponies, two being unicorns, and two being pegasi.

Playset Ponies (unofficial name) - Four play sets were released in year 2, and each of them had a pony that came with. Peachy was re-released with the Pretty Parlor, and Lemon Drop, Sprinkles, and Majesty were introduced with their respective play sets. The figures for the non-pony sidekick characters of Spike the Baby Dragon, Twinkles the Cat, Brandy the Dog, and Duck Soup were each sold along with different Year 1 playsets. A Play Set called Gymkhana was sold only in the UK, with a re-release of Butterscotch included.

Year 2 was also when Ember, the first baby pony (based on Ember from the first G1 MLP TV Special) was introduced. She was not sold in stores, but instead was a mail order reward pony who you could get for free by earning points when buying other ponies.

PETITE PONIES
Petite ponies are tiny ponies, molded with less detail than the brushables. They are made of a hard plastic, different from the Brushables. They stand just under 1 inch tall. Some petite ponies have brushable tails, some have molded tails. They all have molded manes. The petite ponies are not all given official names like the brushables, although unnamed ones sometimes resemble pre-existing ponies. Unlike the brushables, these ponies only have cutie marks on one side, similar to G3 & G4 toys.

CHARMS
Hasbro produced little pony charms using a design based on Hasbro’s Charmkins toy line - re-using a mold Charmkins had used for a toy titled “My Pixie Pony.” The first of the MLP charms ever made was named Powder Puff, and was a part of the membership kit for the US My Little Pony Fan Club. She came with a necklace she could be clipped too, which was also the case for Charmkins toys. In 1984 there were MLP Happy Meal Toys, which were bookmarks that used the mold for the Powder Puff charm. In Year 6 (1987-1988) of MLP, charms using this design came free with some of the pony Brushables. There were 20 different MLP charm designs in the Year 6 Set. The final pony charm came with the Mail Order pony Sweet Scoops, featuring a charm version of Sweet Scoops herself - This is the most highly valued MLP G1 charm. Greece had their own version of the MLP charms, with a different mold. Unlike Petite Ponies, the MLP charms all have names.

PORCELAIN FIGURINES
G1 had a collection of porcelain pony figurines, featuring characters already depicted in past merchandise and the TV Specials. The US Manufacturer behind the figurines was called “Extra Special”. The individual figures were packaged in boxes containing four of the same figure, whereas “scenes” featuring multiple ponies were just one per package. G1 Porcelain figurines made in Europe have a slightly darker color to them, and a rainbow sticker underneath. They are heavily sought out, and usually go for over $100 USD online. Not a ton of information is known about them, including how many were actually made...

  • Figures made by “Maia & Borges”, made in Portugal - 1984

  • Figures made by Spanish company “Comics Spain” - 1985

  • Figures made by “Bully”, made in Germany - 1987

  • 3D Stickers called “Stickles” by “AmToy”, sold in US - 1985

PLUSHIES
The first G1 Plushies were introduced in Year 3, in 1985. The first G1 Plushies were from a line called 'Softies', and these are the main type of G1 Plushies. The plushies released in the first year were Bow Tie, Cotton Candy, Firefly, Blossom, Moondancer, Twilight, and Glory (All ponies with brushables that were released early on) as well as plushie versions of three of the ponies from the Rainbow Pony line - Parasol, Starshine, and Windy. In Year 4, Softies plushies for Cherries Jubilee, Posey, and Honeycomb were made. In Year 5 there were the Mommy & Baby softy ponies, which had Lickety Split, Lofty, and Surprise (all major characters in the TV show), along with their baby pony counterparts, packaged together.

There were two types of non-Softies G1 plushies - the Applause ponies (stylized differently from the Softies), which came out later on in Year 3 - There were Applause plushies for Glory, Cotton Candy, Firefly, and Blossom - and the UK exclusive plushie PJ cases produced by Telitoys. There were three of these: Bow Tie, Cotton Candy, and Trickles. Trickles is the hardest to find.

This website is purely for educational/archival purposes. I do not own the rights to My Little Pony, and most photos on this site are not my own. I provide image sources if the source is still available online, but there are far too many photos for me to ask each person for permission - The whole point of the site is collecting as many photos as possible. If you own one of the photos on this site and do not want it here, message me and I will remove it. This isn't meant to take credit from or upset anyone; It is just for fun and to help record the existence of these toys. If you are made uncomfortable by me using your photos, I will remove them for you.
