OTHER COMMENTS/INFO:

  • Rapunzel was a mail order pony

    • She was available for an unknown amount of time in 1990, where she could be bought for 2 horseshoe points + $8.95

    • She was not sold in stores at any point; she was only ever purchasable through mail order, and thus had (somewhat) limited production

    • She was from Year 9 (1990-1991)

  • Mail order ponies come in plastic baggies, usually w/ accessories included

    • Rapunzel's accessories were a purple comb, pink ribbon, and two barrettes

  • She has tightly wound factory curls, similar to a Rainbow Curl or Candy Cane pony

    • Her gimmick was this, along with her abnormally long tail, making her very similar to the Rainbow Curl ponies who were also marketed in part based on having longer hair than the average pony

    • She has tinsel in her hair, which is uncommon for G1 ponies. All the Princess Ponies had tinsel in their hair, so she may have had tinsel because of the "Princess" association with the name Rapunzel

  • She is often considered to be the rarest US (/standard release) MLP, and sometimes said to be the rarest MLP in general (which just seems to be a direct misunderstanding of the previous statement)

    • She is definitely not the rarest MLP of all time, but it is possible she is the rarest standard-release (not exclusive to a country outside the USA) G1 MLP

    • I haven't seen any direct proof of this claim, though - But she is certainty less common than the average G1 My Little Pony

    • Her production may have been more limited than other Mail Order Ponies (or perhaps her demand was just high) - someone on MLPTP says that collectors reported ordering her and getting a paper saying that she was out of stock, and offering the similar-looking pony, Goldilocks, as a replacement - But I haven't seen multiple claims of this

    • She was a bit higher priced than most mail orders, which may have contributed to potential rarity

    • As far as I'm aware, she was only available for order in the US and possibly Canada, not any other countries

    • She reportedly was not available for a long time - Potentially less than the usual Mail Order Pony. I know some MOP were available multiple years in a row

    • High demand from/regard by collectors may increase her rarity/scarcity

  • Due to perceived and possibly real rarity + community popularity and reputation + unique attributes, Rapunzel is considered the most consistently expensive G1 MLP Brushable - She is well known for being pricey

    • Working on the spreadsheet, the lowest price I found her sold for was $202.50 in 2011 for a pony in poor condition. The highest price was $5,876 in 2020 for a mint in packaging version
