CHARACTER(S): Blueberry Baskets

YEAR OF PRODUCTION: 1987 (Year 6)

PLACE OF PRODUCTION: Hong Kong / China

  • She was made during the switch of pony production from Hong Kong to China. This means that she (and other ponies from her set) can be made in either place. Some Blueberry Baskets will have Hong Kong stamped on their hooves, others will say China

MANUFACTURING COMPANY: Hasbro

TYPICAL PRICE ONLINE: $30 - $40 USD

  • Unsure why she is usually priced higher than your average pony. She does not appear to be distinctly rare - Her limited release in Europe may contribute, but even then, there's no concrete reason for her to be especially pricey

  • Has Factory Curls - curl condition/preservation contributes to price

  • Prone to yellowing/discoloration

OTHER COMMENTS/INFO:

  • Released in the US in Year Six (1987-1988) as a Sweetberry Pony

    • These ponies are all themed on different berries, with scented hair that smells like berries - Many later-year G1 ponies used this sort of gimmick: Perfume Puff Ponies, Candy Cane Ponies, Sundae Best Ponies

    • The first to use the gimmick was the Sundae Best Ponies - Sweetberry ponies were the second set of scented ponies

    • It is debatable weather the Sweetberry Ponies actually smelled that much like what they were supposed to smell like. It's also unclear if they were each uniquely scented based on the type of berry they corelated to, or if they were just meant to be vaguely "berry" scented

  • The Sweetberry Ponies were a standard set of six, with Blueberry Baskets along with Cranberry Muffins, Boysenberry Pie, Strawberry Surprise, Cherry Treats, and Raspberry Jam

  • Blueberry Baskets was sold with a yellow pick comb and a light pinkish purple ribbon

Outside of the USA:

  • She was not sold in the UK - The UK Sweetberry Pony set excluded her and Cranberry Muffins - They did have the rest of the set, although Boysenberry Pie was sold under the name Blackberry Pie

  • Has no known Nirvana variants

Media:

  • There is a G5 pony with the same name and a similar appearance

  • Blueberry Baskets does not seem to appear in any G1 Media

Her US backcard writes: It was blueberry picking time in Ponyland, so Blueberry Baskets and all her Pony friends went out to pick the sweetest tasting blueberries this side of the rainbow! "They smell better than a bouquet of flowers!" cried Blueberry Baskets, as she stuffed her berry basket with lots of blueberries. After all the berries were picked, the ponies returned home to help Blueberry Baskets make dozens of delicious blueberry muffins for everyone! As the last batch of muffins came out of the oven, the smell of blueberries filled the air! All the Ponies thanked Blueberry Baskets for a "berry" good time!

I provide image sources if the source is still available online, but there are far too many photos for me to ask each person for permission - The whole point of the site is collecting as many photos as possible. I try to ask permission on social media or forums that I'm active on, especially if I'm using a lot of photos from one person. If you own one of the photos on this site and do not want it here, message me and I will remove it. This isn't meant to take credit from or upset anyone; It is just for fun and to help record the existence of these toys.
